3D (Stereo) Photography
Stereo photography produces two images for each scene. They usually look the same when viewed independently, but they produce a three-dimensional image when one image is seen by the left eye and the other by the right eye. Essentially, stereo photography mimics our binocular vision: The two images are taken from slightly different positions on a horizontal axis, just as our eyes are positioned. Stereo images are usually viewed with the aid of some device to limit each eye to seeing only the correct image of the pair. For example, printed stereo pairs are commonly placed in a viewer that uses lenses to allow the user to easily focus each eye separately. In other cases special glasses are used to separate the two images, one to each eye. This is not practical for viewing a web site like this, but it is possible, with some practice, to "free view" a stereo pair without the aid of a viewer. Some people prefer to do this in a cross-eyed fashion (left image is placed on the right and vice-versa) and others prefer "wide eyed." In either case, the trick is to train your eyes to "de-couple" the muscular functions of focus and parallax. That is, the direction that the eyes point is usually related to the distance of the object being observed, as is the focus. But to free view you have to make each eye look at the correct image (wherever it is), but focus at the correct distance to produce a sharp image. I prefer the "wide eyed" method and all the images here are presented in that format.
