Total Lunar Eclipse

A lunar eclipse is when Earth passes directly between the Sun and Moon, thus putting the Moon in Earth's shadow.  This can only happen when the moon is "full", but does not happen on every full moon because the Moon's orbit around Earth is not in the same plane as the Sun/Earth plane.  The orange color appears because the main source of light on the Moon during an eclipse is sunlight that is refracted by Earth's atmosphere.  It may have been somewhat different before our atmosphere became polluted.
