"Rock of Ages"

The Rock of Ages granite quarry in Barre, Vermont offers tours of its operations for a fee. But you can see this abandoned quarry for free and it is far more interesting, although you can see it from just one vantage point. Most of the pit is filled with water - maybe 200 feet deep. The water is green and looks fairly dirty, but if you throw a rock into it you can watch it fall for a very long time. I had to do a lot of work on this image to hold some detail in the areas in direct sunlight. Fuji S2 with Nikkor 180/2.8, mid 2003 |
